What to Do if Cockatiel Nostrils Blocked by Food?

Posted by DhienarChannel on Sunday, August 24, 2014

My poor little one month old thing, Yuhu, has to suffer his left nostril clogged by his Kaytee porridge. The food, Kaytee, is powder and given as a porridge by adding some amount of water to meet the right consistency. Not that means it covered all over the nostril, but it just stuck there.

He's still a baby cockatiel and I need to hand feeding him. It's really stressful to me that I can't hand feeding him properly. I saw the previous owner did it and it looked so easy. When I hold his head, he keeps shake his head and won't open his mouth. It involves two persons to hand feeding Yuhu, usually my dad holds him and I put the syringe with a feeding tip (rubber) into his mouth. Not long after I inject some amount of Kaytee, he will shake head like demanding to stop. That time, the Kaytee porridge will spread all over his head and body. By time I manage my skill to clean his beak, fur on his neck, head, etc. The thing I'm afraid of is it will go spread to his eyes and nostrils when he shakes head.

That happened on Tuesday aternoon, 19 August 2014. The porridge covered his left nostril. If you are familiar with how baby cockatiel nostrils look, you will understand the fear any object may go enter easily. They look really open up. So I wiped it but a little amount of it is there inside. Kaytee porridge characteristic is it will harden by time, but if we pour water again on it and try to rub/wipe/mix it, it will dilute back. So to clean harden Kaytee porridge on his fur, I will take water by my fingers several times and rub it gently until it finally exuviate.

Baby Yuhu on my bro's hand.

It doesn't bother my baby cockatiel. He is still very happy and active. No redness or what. But it bothers me a lot. I can't see him in condition he is not supposed to be. I decided to see a vet. Man.. it's so damn hard to get avian vet. Only a few Google results show signs the existence of avian vet in Indonesia and they are more like articles talking about this and that and quoting those avian pets. Worse, they are way so far from my place and those articles uploaded many years ago. I listed phone numbers of the nearest vets and contact them one by one. Mostly no answer and the rest said, "I'm not an exotic animals specialist." Yeah, which I think aka 'so I don't want/can't to do any action on your baby cockatiel)'.

At about 7 pm on the same day, my mom just remembered one of my neighbour (about 300 m away from my home) nurses wild cats and go regularly to a vet. My brother got the vet's number. It took me to do several calls until the doctor picked it. She guided me to do first aid action and told something else but I couldn't get anything. Her voice in call dropped always (bad network). But she told me to send Yuhu's pic by whatsapp. No response after that. So I tried to pick it up by toothpick that I covered by wet double-layered cotton cloth. I could take a very tiny piece out of the nostril and the leftover moved down which I'm assuming it will be more difficult for the vet to take action on. How stupid I am!

I stared at his nostril for a long time like hours. Comparing the size, the form, and the color of the left with the right one. I feel the nostril is getting bigger, or maybe it's just me. From what I know, there is a soft tissue inside the nostril but sometimes I feel nothing more there. OMG. I have no peace. Every minute I pray to God to heal it, not to make me get my peace, but it's for my baby cockatiel. I wanna see him all right. At midnight I checked again, there is that tissue but it looked deeper inside. I don't know to describe well.

Early morning at 5 am, the next day (Wed 20 August 201), finally the vet replied to take him to her place. I didn't know what to say. She would curse me for my stupidity if I ever told her. Ya Allah, please save my baby.
